ONS Virtual Microdata Laboratories
Introduction
The ONS Virtual Microdata Laboratory (VML) is a facility within the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which enables access to restricted microdata contained in ONS surveys and other confidential datasets. Documents produced by the ONS about the VML are available to download from the bottom of this page.
Available datasets
You can research a wide variety of ONS data at the VML including:
- Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings
- Labour Force Survey
- New Earnings Survey
- Business Structure Database (A version of the Inter Departmental Business Register)

Matching other data sources
Subject to approval, other external data sources can be matched to the VML data.
Software in the ONS Virtual Microdata Laboratory
Data is usually made available in Stata, but can be converted to other formats as required.
Data access
Applications for VML data go through four stages. These are:
1. Submit application form
2. Gain research approval from the ONS and any other data providers
3. Sign contracts and licence agreements
4. Receive training if necessary to use the VML.

4. Titchfield – Segensworth Road, Titchfield, Fareham, PO15 5RR (1 terminal)
