About the Office for National Statistics

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) collects and provides independent information and publications covering a wide range of UK economic and social data. The Office was created in 1996 through a merger of the Central Statistical Office and the Office for Population Censuses and Surveys.

Its main responsibilities include administration and analyses of the decennial Census, conducting a large number of surveys for research purposes and the compiling and publication of a large volume of economic and labour market statistics.

The Office for National Statistics collects and/or holds a vast number of datasets and covers all major themes including Agriculture and Environment, Business and Energy, Children, Education and Skills, Crime and Justice, Economy, Government, Health and Social Care, Labour Market, People and Places, Population and Travel and Transport.

In addition to the Census and surveys that are administered by ONS, certain health and population records (including registrations of birth and deaths and some cancer statistics) are also the ‘original property’ of ONS. A larger volume of statistics held by ONS is generated by other researchers or government departments.

The ADLS will add new information and datasets to the ONS section over time. Please keep checking back and you may also wish to receive notification of these updates by registering with us.
