Additional Resources
The Department for Work and Pensions provide the following resources for researchers:
1. DWP Tabulation Tool
The DWP Tabulation Tool allows you to download and manipulate a variety of DWP National Statistics (including Benefit Caseloads) to your requirements.
2. The Generic Security Accreditation Document (GSAD)
The Generic Security Accreditation Document (GSAD) was developed by the Department for Work and Pensions as a means of gaining adequate assurance of data being processed by the Department’s contracted research organisations. The same security requirements would also apply to establish a means of giving non-contracted organisations access to data that was partially anonymised.
About the Department for Work and Pensions
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is the largest public service department in the United Kingdom. Their aim is to enable people to fulfil their potential over longer and more active lives. The DWP administer the majority of benefits in the UK to people who are out of work, have families, are in ill health, have a disability, are of a pensionable age, or care for others.
The DWP has a large research and statistics section that provides information about social and economic issues. It also produces a number of statistical outputs providing aggregate level data on benefit caseloads and amount of payments by geographical area. The primary DWP administrative data resource is the Work and Pensions Longitudinal Study (WPLS) which brings together all the data on benefits claimants in the UK and also includes some data from the HMRC relating to taxes, earnings and savings. Smaller sample benefit datasets are also created from individual records held by the DWP.
Although the WPLS has been previously accessible for research purposes, there is currently no external access to any DWP datasets. At this point in time, reviews on data governance and access procedures are currently being updated.
The ADLS will add new information to the DWP section over time. Please keep checking back and you may also wish to receive notification of these updates by registering with us.
